Christmas - The reason for the season
We’re now only a few days away from celebrating Christmas! But what are we actually celebrating every time the 25th of December rolls around?
It’s so easy to get distracted by the lights, the presents, the food and festivities and everything that surrounds this time of the year.
We get caught up in the material side of Christmas, especially when we are surrounded by widespread commercialism that robs Christmas of its true meaning.
However, Christmas commemorates that God entered the world. It is the celebration of the Birth of the Saviour of the world, Jesus!
What’s more exciting than some guy squeezing down a chimney, is the true meaning of Christmas – that God so loved us that He gave His only Son.
This Christmas we need to unwrap the Saviour, Jesus Christ, whose birth was a fulfilment of the scriptures.
How wonderful that God Himself, chose to come as a helpless, vulnerable child in a stable in Bethlehem to then show us how to live.
As St Clare of Assisi put it so eloquently, “Rejoice and be glad that so great and good a Lord, on coming into the Virgin’s womb, willed to appear despised, needy and poor in this world, so that those who were in dire poverty, and suffering a great need of heavenly food, might be made rich in Him.”
May the joy of Christmas resonate in our homes and families, among our neighbours, friends and co-workers.May it inspire us to reach out to those less fortunate than us, and they who do not know the love of Christ.
The Saviour is born and He can take away fear and free us from sin and fill our hearts with everlasting peace and joy.
May the most important gift that we unwrap this month be the true meaning of Christmas, and that is Jesus Christ, He who is the reason for the season.
