Sculptures by the Sea - Year 11/12 Excursion
Friday mornings don't get better than spending it at the beach.
On 17 of March, Years 11 and 12 General and ATAR Visual Art students were able to wander about the exhibition 'Sculptures by the Sea' at Cottesloe Beach, appreciating the many works from international and national contemporary artists. No two artworks were the same or even remotely similar. All their concepts, shapes, sizes and colours varied from a feathery chair (Falling, Olga Cironis) to a fully functioning art studio in a can (Cansumerism, Tim Keevil and Hayley Bahr). Most of the morning was spent walking in between artworks analysing their structure and meaning which was enjoyable way to start the morning.
The day wasn’t complete as after a few group photos we had a talk with emerging Subiaco artist Ryan Shaw who talked about his work titled 'Curiousity Box'. He explained his processes and thinking behind his clever piece to bring people together in anticipation for the surprise of what's in the automated box.
After an insightful talk with Ryan, we moved to "Homeless" by Kerrie Argent who had used recycled knit sweaters to create a statement about homelessness and consumerism in Australian society. Both artists gave us an amazing view into their thinking and our relaxed morning by the beach moved to The Art Gallery of Western Australia.
Here we were shown artworks which exceeded 100 years old which was captivating in its sheer age. We compared artworks from modern artists to older artists explaining Australian identity. However, the main attraction of the gallery was the beautiful artworks from the 2016 Year 12 artists in the exhibition ‘Perspectives’. The standard of work displayed really exhibited the talent that the past Year 12s had. We were able to admire the works of former Corpus Christi students Gracie Drennan with her piece ‘Ashanti’ and Claudia Karwacki's piece ‘Polar Lights’.
We concluded our day with the gallery which really inspired many of the students in their own respects.
