Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, is a traditional day of feasting celebrated before the start of Lent in the Catholic calendar. It falls on the day before Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of the 40-day period of fasting and reflection leading up to Easter. Historically, Shrove Tuesday was a time for Christians to confess their sins and seek absolution, known as “shriving,” in preparation for Lent.
Pancakes are traditionally served on Shrove Tuesday as a way to use up rich ingredients like eggs, milk, and sugar, which were often restricted during the Lenten season. Making pancakes allowed people to enjoy a final feast and clear out their cupboards of indulgent foods, symbolising the transition to a period of simplicity and self-discipline.
On this day the College will host a 'Pancake Breakfast'. Check back for details that will be shared closer to the date.
