Music
At Corpus Christi College, we offer a rigorous and sequentially based music program from Pre-Kindergarten through to Year 6, whereby every class receives 50 mins of music instruction a week in a beautiful purpose-built, well-resourced music room. It is a practical, creative subject that helps to develop musical skills and the ability to express personal thoughts and feelings through sound.
The classroom music program is based on the Kodaly Music Education philosophy.
“Kodály believed that singing should be the foundation of all music education. “The use of the voice is one of the most defining features of the Kodály approach. The voice is the most accessible of all instruments and this makes it most suitable for musical instruction and can lead to a highly developed musical ear. By focusing on learning through engaging with music, singing, playing, moving and enjoying, music becomes part of the natural learning process.” (Kodaly Music Education Institute of Australia).
The music program at Corpus Christi College aims:
For all children to recognise their musical potential and enjoy music, acquiring the social skills of making music together.
To encourage children to develop socially, morally and spiritually, to be creative, imaginative, constructive, to be thinkers and planners.
To develop the capacity to express ideas and feelings symbolically through the medium of sound.
To develop sound, physical and intellectual skills and concepts while engaged in musical activity.
To develop an awareness of musical traditions and developments in a variety of styles, cultures and periods.
Students at Corpus Christi College are offered further music tuition from Year 3 when they can join the School Choir Program, and again in Year 4, where they can choose to begin private lessons on an instrument.
All students participate in Liturgy singing once a week that brings the whole school together to prepare for school Masses and Performing Arts events.
