Supporting Your Teen Through Year 12 Exams: A Guide for Parents

As a parent, your teenager's Year 12 exams can be just as nerve-wracking for you as it is for them. The pressure, anticipation, and uncertainty can feel overwhelming. Here are some practical strategies to support your teen during this critical period:

 Be Empathetic, Not Comparative

  • Avoid Comparisons: While you may have experienced Year 12 stress, refrain from saying, "Back in my day..." or emphasizing how challenging it was. Acknowledge that their journey is unique, especially considering the additional complexities brought by the pandemic over the last few years.

  • Validate Their Struggles: Recognize that Year 12 is inherently stressful.  Show empathy and understanding.

Keep Communication Open

  • Initiate Conversations: Start conversations about their feelings and experiences. Ask open-ended questions like, "How are you coping?" or "What's been on your mind lately?"

  • Choose the Right Moments: Find low-pressure times to chat – during walks, while doing chores, or even watching TV together. Reinforce your positive relationship beyond academics.

Recognize Stress Indicators

  • Physical Signs: Watch for physical symptoms like chest tightness, upset stomach, or fatigue due to lack of sleep.

  • Mental Strain: Be alert to obsessive thoughts or worst-case scenario thinking.

  • Behavioural Changes: Notice if they withdraw, become aggressive, or avoid situations.

Drop the Pressure

  • Manage Expectations: Avoid adding your own expectations or interfering. Instead, celebrate milestones and small victories.

  • Breaks and Rewards: Encourage regular breaks during study sessions. Spending time outdoors away from screens can rejuvenate their minds.

Focus on Their Well-Being

  • Quality Sleep: Prioritize restful sleep. Lack of sleep affects concentration and mood.

  • Balanced Diet: Ensure they eat nutritious meals. Avoid excessive caffeine or sugary snacks.

  • Physical Activity: Encourage light exercise – it boosts mood and reduces stress.

Remember, your support matters more than ever. Be their sounding board, their cheerleader, and their calm amidst the storm. Your teen will appreciate your understanding and unwavering presence during this pivotal time.
