E-News 14 June 2022

Welcome to Week 8

College Mission

Over the past few editions of eNews, I have been updating our community on the progress of the development of our Values and Vision. In this edition I would like to focus on our Mission as a K-12 Catholic school. These three aspects of our community underpin all that we do and provide the direction for us to continue to grow and develop our K-12 College.

As mentioned, we are very grateful for the input from parents, staff and students into the development of our Values, Vision and Mission and am excited at the prospect of bringing them to life in the daily routines of the College.

Our Mission is our purpose. It is the way that we function each and every day as we strive toward our vision of being outstanding for others. As a progressive Catholic school, we innovate in the desire to best prepare students for their future world. We understand the dynamic nature of the current global landscape and therefore aim to provide a contemporary, holistic, skills-based learning environment that develops a sense of agility in our students to thrive in their exciting life-long journey.

The Corpus Christi is the Body of Christ. We are one school, one community, one body in Christ, with each part having a very special role to play. Our Mission therefore extends to us seeing the needs of all of our students and creating an environment that allows them to shine.

We value the uniqueness of our students and celebrate their individuality. It is our mission as a K-12 Catholic school to constantly explore ways that we can personalise the learning, care and faith development journey for all of our students. We see our students for whom they are and the gifts that they bring and therefore always aim to offer pathways and opportunities to promote student growth and success.

As a leadership team, we were privileged to recently attend a three-day evangelisation program led with Bishop Gerard Holohan. Part of the program afforded us the opportunity to reflect on our mission as a Catholic school and how we were genuinely living it out in our community. The process included focussing on a poem by St Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) entitled ‘Christ Has no Body’:

Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
Compassion on this world,
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,
Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
compassion on this world.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

This inspirational poem encourages us to look through the eyes of Christ with compassion in all that we do to see the needs of others and to be his body, feet and hands in reaching out to care and support.

This then is very much a part of our mission as a K-12 Catholic school – that is to genuinely see others for whom they are, to celebrate their God-given gifts and to provide support and personalised growth opportunities and pathways to assist them to develop as whole persons.

Key Events and Activities

As I have previously mentioned, the implementation of COVID-19 baseline protocols has allowed us to reintroduce a range of co-curricular activities to support learning in the classrooms.

Once such recent activity was our Year 11 Dinner Dance which was held at Optus Stadium on Friday evening last week. I need to commend this very special group of students who enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate together as a cohort and participate in the right spirit.

Events of this type build a sense of connection amongst the students and allow them to connect with one another outside of the regular school environment. It helps to build positive relationships and support their overall wellbeing in providing moments of fun and joy.

I would like to acknowledge the considerable efforts of Head of Year 11 Mr Simon Messer and the Year 11 Homeroom teachers for their efforts in making this memorable event possible.

Another key even that occurred recently was the announcement of our Year 7 Leadership group last week. We congratulate our student leaders for 2022 and wish them all of the very best in their roles.

I would like to also acknowledge the many other students in Year 7 who put their hand up to lead. Whilst we have a limited number of formal leadership positions currently available, we believe that all of our students have the capacity to lead. We want them to lead their own learning, their behaviours and the positive way that they engage in the College. Students then become role models for others and support the ongoing development of an energised and industrious College culture – they therefore assume a leadership mantle whether they have a badge or not.

We thank Head of Year 7 Mr Stephen Kingwell for his terrific efforts in organising this important leadership opportunity for our students.

Corpus Christi is a school that provides an abundance of different programs, events and activities to connect students and to allow them to find their pathway. From whole school musicals to public speaking, from Retreats through to a rich array of sporting events, the College provides a plethora of different learning opportunities for students both in and outside of the classroom. In developing as whole persons, we want our students to take full advantage of the excellent array of options available.

Best wishes and every blessing

Jeff Allen
Principal

Better Beginnings Family Literacy Session for Kindergarten Parents

The Primary Campus is participating in the Better Beginnings family literacy program. It is a Western Australian program that connects families with books through free reading packs. Their goal is to inspire a love of literacy and learning for all WA children by encouraging families to read, talk, sing, write and play with their child every day.

We welcome Lee Beazley, Librarian from Bull Creek Library, to tell us more about the program on Wednesday 15 June in our Primary Library at 9.00am. Lee will talk to 4 Year old Kindergarten parents in a brief talk followed by a visit to the classrooms.

We look forward to welcoming you and providing more information about the program.

Middle School (Years 7-9)

Dear Parents

The term has been a busy one, with the challenges of NAPLAN and the continued impact of covid for our student body, however they remain resilient and committed to finding the best out of themselves and the situation. Extra-curricular attendance is flourishing, student engagement is clear and specific events for each year group have allowed for fun and connecting to resume.

Year 7 Student Leaders

The Year 7 Student Leadership positions were finalised, please see some feedback from Mr Kingwell (Head of Year 7) below.

On Wednesday our Year 7 student leaders for 2022 were presented to the community with their badge ceremony. The process was designed to be one where students felt appreciated and empowered. Students could nominate themselves, staff members could nominate students, and best of all, students could nominate one another for positions. With only 24 positions available and 230 students in the cohort, it was extremely pleasing to have 159 students nominate for leadership positions.

Furthermore, the citations that students wrote when nominating their peers led to some heart-warming reading. It showed that the Year 7 students have forged strong bonds in the short time they have been a part of the College. During the presentation, College Principal Mr Jeff Allen applauded how the students embraced the nomination process and emphasised that it was not just the students who have the formal title that can act as leaders, but all students can make small changes to enliven and impact others around them positively.

I congratulate all our successful candidates and look forward to seeing their capacity grow throughout their time at the College.

Year 9 Personal Project

Year 9 students have continued to progress along with their Personal Projects, supported by Mr Barron (Head of Year 9), Homeroom Teachers and Supervisor teachers who have met and offered guidance and mentorship. Personal project’s are a great opportunity for students to find challenge for themselves in whatever area a student is pulled towards. They are marked against the Outcome (creativity, quality of the outcome, overall concept, challenge and communication), the Report and finally the Exhibition but really it is the process where the key learning takes place. Please take the time to discuss this with your children.

Tips and Advice

As we approach the last 3 weeks of term, it is a timely point in the term where Semester 1 Report writing begins, final assessments occur and students are encouraged to put in that last big effort towards achieving their potential. Can I take this opportunity to remind parents about the Study Skills approach we have developed, and established with students. Like most things, this needs to practice and refinement so please encourage students to use this in conjunction with a study timetable. All this information can be found at:

Year 11 Dinner Dance

On Friday night Year 11 students, members of the College Leadership Team, Homeroom Teachers and Teacher Assistants (all 214 of us) came together to celebrate the Year 11 Dinner Dance at the Optus Stadium.

It was a memorable night for so many different reasons. Optus Stadium provided the ideal setting with pre dinner drinks served at the Champions Terrace, overlooking the amazing playing surface followed by dinner and dancing in the River View Room, living up to its namesake overlooking the Swan River, Matagarup Bridge and the Perth CBD. The DJ had everyone showing their moves on the dance floor and it was great to see everyone all “glammed up”.

A big thank you to everyone involved for a fantastic night.

Photos coming soon!

Grit and Passion

The best way to build your wellbeing and personal growth is through giving of yourself to make a positive difference to others’ lives; doing good to feel good and feeling good to do good. Giving adds meaning to your life. Do little kind things for others often to send out ripples of wellbeing feelings, which will eventually, find themselves back to. How often do you smile and say hello to other people?

Acknowledgement: Frankl & Nakanishi Grit = passion + long term persistence + self-control of emotions and impulses.

It is that X-factor of resilience which enables students to push through when they think we can’t. Grit and social connectedness are the two most powerful predictors of student success. Also, having the capability to stay focused on the job at hand and ignore distractions is an important skill to cultivate in students to ensure their personal and academic growth. Using the strengths leadership, bravery, self-control and perspective will connect them with the moment, enabling them to do the right thing and do the thing right.

Teaching students the difference between activity and action will raise their self-awareness of when they are involved in action or activity. Activity is being involved in things with little purpose and when on autopilot. Action is being decisive with things that matter and intentionally following through with meaning and purpose. When students show grit, they are full of action. Other ingredients which contribute to having grit include believing that other people matter and having a higher purpose in life to make a positive difference. Also, understanding that the right thing to do is nearly always the hard thing to do and then being prepared to do it.

Page 50 and 51 of the 2022 Secondary College Diary has some activities students can complete related to Grit and Passion. Have your child ask themselves the following questions.

  •  When is a time you have harnessed passion and grit to achieve something special?

  • Which emotions do you need to self-regulate when you harness passion and grit?

  • What are the possible consequences for those who choose to be self-determined to use grit to strive passionately for their goals and then those who take things as they come?

  • What resilience skill could help you with Grit and Passion (see pages 6&7 of diary)?

  • Try some activities from the websites listed
