Welcome to Week 6

College Vision

In the last edition of eNews, I wrote about our K-12 College values and how they underpin all that we do at Corpus Christi College. In being compassionate, courageous and committed, we work together to shape a Christ-centred community that focuses on the development of our students as whole persons.

In providing a relational and inclusive community, we build student confidence to step outside of their comfort zone to explore new learnings. We want our students to celebrate their unique talents and proudly let their light shine. Our aim for them is to be aspirational and to strive to be their best selves to become outstanding in whatever field of endeavour that they choose.

In modelling Jesus, we then encourage students to look outward to see and act on the needs of those around them. Our vision therefore is for students to be outstanding for others. That is to live their life to the full and to harness their gifts in service of those in need.

In being outstanding for others, we also aim to challenge the status quo when we know that it does not reflect the type of world that Jesus envisaged. In being compassionate people, we stand out and act through compassion and in the knowledge that we are living out our values in a genuine way.

Corpus Christi College is a school of opportunity. We aim to provide a multitude of learning, faith, social and emotional pathways and opportunities for students to explore their talents across the years. We encourage them to give of their best efforts always and to take full advantage of the curricular and extracurricular activities on offer. We are very pleased that we have been able to reintroduce a number of activities following the implementation of baseline COVID protocols and encourage students to seek out their classroom teachers and Heads of Year and to get involved.

National Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day

National Reconciliation Week is “a time for all Australians to learn about shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how everyone can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia” (CEWA).

The 2022 theme, Be Brave. Make Change, is a “challenge to all Australians to be brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can make change for the benefit of all Australians” (https://www.reconciliation.org.au/).

Reconciliation Australia says that “we all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.”

Last week we acknowledged the very significant and important anniversary of Sorry Day on Thursday 26 May. The Year 10 student leadership team organised a whole of school activity where students were invited to present their messages of support. We also ran an awareness campaign about Sorry Day and integrated the theme into our daily prayer.

We encourage all within our community to ‘be brave and make a change’.

Friends of Corpus Update

Thank you to those parents and caregivers who attended our inaugural Friends of Corpus workshop on 18 May at the College.

We were able to provide parents and caregivers with an update on the progression of our Vison, Mission and Values development and also invite their input into the development of a K-12 Friends of Corpus strategy.

I am very grateful to those parents who gave of their time and talents in shaping up a strategy that will allow parents to be engaged in our K-12 school involved in the school in a very genuine way.

We focused on our key strategic drivers of Learning, Community, Ministry and Stewardship and sought input from parents as to how we could bring these alive at our school in a way that engages all aspect of our community.

We know that the research is very clear around the positive impact that parent engagement has on student learning and therefore continue to encourage families to become fully involved in the educational lives of their children. “Parent engagement has been shown to improve students’ self-esteem, school attendance, and behaviour at school. In fact, Hattie (2008) estimated that effective parent engagement could add the equivalent of 2 or 3 extra years to a child’s education.” (Advancing Partnerships – Parent and Community Engagement Framework).

We look forward to further updating you soon as we continue to shape up our Friends of Corpus initiative around our four strategic drivers and would welcome your ongoing involvement and input.

Well done to all our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students for their focus and perseverance in completing all the NAPLAN assessments over Weeks 3 and 4. Results will be forwarded to parents as soon as they are received by the College.

Parent Workshop on Puberty

We invite parents and guardians of our Year 5-6 students to attend a workshop on puberty by the Centre for Life, Marriage and Family.

Tuesday 14 June 2022, 6.00pm - 7.30pm at Corpus Christi College.

Location will be sent with a confirmation email closer to the date.

Primary Portrait Day

The Primary Portraits have been rescheduled to be spread over two days, with Kindy - Year 2 and Year 6 (winter uniform) taking place yesterday. The remaining portraits are as below:

Thursday 9 June 2022:

Pre-Kindergarten, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 (Winter Uniform)
Year 6 (Leavers/Graduating Primary shirts)

Family photos will be scheduled on for the morning, prior to school commencing.

Please note this in your diary and you will receive further information from the photographers as to the ordering procedures and requirements.

If your child is unwell and cannot attend the above nominated day, a catch-up session will be communicated to you in due course.

Drop Off and Pick Up

A friendly reminder that once entering the drop off and pick up lanes during drop off or pick up times, you may not leave your vehicle to walk into the school and pick up your child. If you must leave your car, then please park in a designated car bay.

There is always a supervising teacher at both drive throughs to assist in locating your child and directing them to your car.

Year 6 Destination Survey

Corpus Christi College from 1 January 2022 is a K-12 College and is delighted to be able to offer the continuation of learning from Primary through to Secondary School.

As we are now experiencing a waitlist for the Year 7 2023 cohort, we would like to confirm that all current Year 6s at the Primary Campus will continue on to the Secondary School next year.

Primary Library News

Better Beginnings Family Literacy Session for Kindergarten Parents

The Primary Campus is participating in the Better Beginnings family literacy program. It is a Western Australian program that connects families with books through free reading packs. Their goal is to inspire a love of literacy and learning for all WA children by encouraging families to read, talk, sing, write and play with their child every day.

We welcome Lee Beazley, Librarian from Bull Creek Library, to tell us more about the program on Wednesday 15 June in our Primary Library at 9.00am. Lee will talk to 4 Year old Kindergarten parents in a brief talk followed by a visit to the classrooms.

We look forward to welcoming you and providing more information about the program.

National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime is a day to celebrate literacy and build the foundations for a life-long love of reading in your young learners. Our Primary Campus took part on Wednesday 25 May 2022 at 11:00 am to read Family Tree by musician Josh Pyke.

Rocket League – Year 6 FUSE Cup International Competition

Last week, our Year 6 Rocket League eSports team represented Corpus Christi College in the International FUSE Cup event. Lachlan, Massimo, Kian, Daniel, Edwin and Adhiyan have been giving up their free time for the last few weeks, to train together and practice their teamwork and mechanical skills.

Our two teams competed against Year 5 - Year 8 students from schools in Macao, China, Hong Kong, W.A. and the east coast of Australia. After a series of dominating matches, both of our teams moved through to the Quarter Final elimination round. Our second team was unfortunately eliminated in this phase; however, Team 1 continued their streak and held each team they versed to 0 goals. Showing their dominance again, our Team 1 students won their Semi-final 4 - 0 and then the Grand-final series, 5-0, 9-0.

We congratulate Lachlan and Massimo for their outstanding efforts during this event and for being named as the FUSE Cup International Champions.

All our students showed great sportsmanship throughout the competition, playing with a positive attitude, being very encouraging to one another and working well as a team. Both teams should all be proud of their efforts, and we look forward to Corpus Christi College participating in future FUSE Cup tournaments.

Year 1 Assembly

This term in Year 1 we are learning how to live out our college value of ‘Compassion’ in all that we do. The aim of our Year 1 assembly item on Friday morning was to explain what compassion is and why it is important to be compassionate. We talked about different ways we could show compassion to others and examples of behaviour that is not compassionate. We finished our assembly with a Compassion song.

Scholastic Book Club

Scholastic Book club Issue 4 catalogues have been sent home.

There are a few catalogues in the pamphlet stand in the Primary Office if you need one.

Orders for Issue 4 are due Thursday 2 June.

All Secondary (Years 7-12)

House Uniform on Wednesday

House activities will be taking place in Extended Homeroom tomorrow, Wednesday 1 June 2022 for Years 7 to 12 students.

Students are participating in various House Activities - some quite active - and they have permission to wear their House uniform to the College - ideally full winter tracksuit with House shirt.

Smart Rider Reminder for Cafeteria

Please remember to bring your Smart Rider to the cafeteria if you are using flexischools. This will ensure that queuing up for the cafeteria will run as smoothly and quickly as possible for all students.

If you have lost your card, please visit the Secondary Student Services to order a replacement.

VET and Transition Services Update

The College of Electrical Training (CET) is now seeking Expressions of Interest from Year 10 students for the 2023.

Certificate II Electrotechnology Pre-Apprenticeship in School Program.

To be considered for the program students and schools will need to complete the following steps:

1. Students are required to submit a CET Expression of Interest form (attached via this link) to their school VET Co-ordinator by the end of Term 2, Week 9 (Friday 24 June 2022). The school will return completed Expression of Interest forms to the CET Field Officer via email by the end of Term 2, Week 10 (Friday, 1 July 2022).

Expression of interests that are not submitted to CET by the school will not be accepted. CET will not accept EOI’s from students that have not achieved a ‘C’ Grade average.

Positive Self-talk

Often some of the most negative messages students receive come from their own mind chatter. This tends to happen when they are under pressure and have a fixed mindset that there is nothing they can do about their issues and that they are permanent. One of the most effective positive coping strategies to overcome negative mind chatter, is to teach students is the power of positive self-talk. In fact, it will benefit our state of wellbeing to use it often too.

Positive self-talk are I can and I will statements, which students say over and over to themselves. Doing this, contests the negatives and moves their thinking from pessimistic to optimistic outlooks. They start looking for what is right in what they are doing. A good idea is to make up 4 or 5 self-talk statements and practise saying them to themselves, to be prepared when they need to use them.

The key to making positive self-talk most effective in maintaining growth mindsets, is to use it immediately they notice themselves having negative thoughts entering their minds. When used well, these statements act as excellent off ramps for negative thinking and fixed mindsets. Positive self-talk is using their strengths to believe that they have what it takes to achieve what they set out to do.

On page 48 of the College Diary is a quick activity on mastering self-talk. Encourage your child to read and discuss with you the questions listed.

What is a time you used self-talk to help you to overcome a challenge?
How could you use self-talk to increase your ratio of positive to negative thoughts?
What are the possible consequences for those who choose to create and practise self-talk statements to be prepared and then those who don’t?
What resilience skill could help you with Mastering Self-talk (see pages 6&7 of the diary)?

Read and discuss Attitude of Relationships about them enjoying the social connectedness of enjoying having fun with others, and ask students to journal their thoughts in their diaries about: When are times you felt that you had an attitude of relationships?

Each week, there will be a Word of the Week, so our service-learning vocabulary improves as a College.

Extended Homeroom Week 5

Last week during Extended Homeroom on Wednesday, students had some time with their Homeroom to discuss several service learning quotes. These quotes were then put around the room as a display/collage to keep the conversation going. The Senior students should have also had a conversation about what opportunities and hours they have completed and what they will be doing. A big thank you to staff who helped facilitate this extended homeroom.

Vinnies Winter Appeal

Our annual Vinnies Winter Appeal will be launched in Week 7 of this term. All year groups are asked to participate in this appeal. Each section of the College will have a theme regarding donations, please see below:

K to 6 students – blankets
Year 7 students – socks
Year 8 students – toiletries
Year 9 students – winter accessories
Year 10 to 12 students – sleeping bags and blankets
All Staff – sleeping bags, blankets, and toiletries

Our Senior School Students in Years 10 to 12 will have an opportunity to participate in the Sleep Out. This annual event will be happening on Friday Term 3 Week 1. This is a wonderful opportunity for all our senior students to truly understand what it means to be homeless. Application forms for Vinnies Winter Sleep Out will be out in Week 8 and can be collected from the Upper Room. The forms are due back by Monday Week 10 to the Upper Room.

City of Melville Youth Steering Group

Senior School Students

The City of Melville has launched their recruitment for the first ever Youth Steering Group! Please see attached flyer and details below, including a link to the application.

Successful applicants will be aged 16-25 and have a strong connection to our community. They’ll be paid $25/hour for their time in our monthly meetings, and there’s also a prize draw for all applicants to win a share of $400 worth of Westfield gift vouchers!

The group will get together monthly to discuss issues and ideas that are important to young people, work on events, activities and marketing to reach young people, and help make the City of Melville a better place to live.

Student Success

Aiden G (Year 4G)

Congratulations to Aiden who was the winner for week two in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Aiden's favourite books are the Treehouse books by Andy Griffiths and he says he loves reading because he gets to discover many different things.

Grace N (Year 6G)

Grace was recently selected to participate in the 12 Years and Under WA State AFL team. The level of dedication and training that Grace has displayed to reach this milestone is commendable.

Eilidh Milne (Year 8)

On the weekend WA’s amazing swim athletes were recognised for their achievements at the recent Age National Championships in Adelaide. Eilidh in Year 8 Romero was recognised at the awards for being a National Finalist.

Eilidh competed in the 50m, 100m and 200m Backstroke and the 50m and 100m Freestyle at the Australian Age National Championships held across in Adelaide last month. Across her events she achieved 4 new Personal Bests, made the A final for the 200m Backstroke and the B final for the 100m Backstroke. Eilidh took 6th place in Australia for the 13 Year Old 200m Backstroke.

Harlen Vassallo (Year 8)

Harlen has recently been involved in the Happy Box Project which supports Indigenous girls and women in the most remote corners of Australia - igniting smiles and promoting self care with basic toiletries.

Harlen used his earned money to buy items to make up the care packs and send off two happy boxes for this initiative.

It is so wonderful to see our students experiencing the joy of spreading, joy, generosity and kindness to others. Well done Harlen!
