College Calendar

As we head towards the end of Term Three, we still have many significant events on the College Calendar.

For our senior students, I know that completing the last of their assessments prior to examinations is their key focus. They have also had to balance the many co-curricular activities that are still on the College calendar – remarkable really!

The 2021 Performing Arts Festival has now concluded. I would like to congratulate all Corpus Christi College participants in the festival. Thank you to all our Music and Dance teachers, students and tutors for all your hard work, dedication and commitment in participating and in promoting arts. For a full list of award winners please click here.

Congratulations to some overall category winners from Corpus:

Dance, Secondary - with their Ensemble piece, Breathe

Instrumental Duet – Megan Schutte and Anna Thomson

The Dance students were invited to perform at the Spirit of the Arts Festival at Perth Arena last night and produced another stunning performance. Thank you to teachers Mrs Caroline Stevenson and Ms Emma Wells.

On Wednesday our Athletics team will be participating in the Associated Catholic Colleges (ACC) A Division Athletics Carnival. We wish them every success.

On Wednesday evening, the College Arts Exhibition commences in the James Nestor Performing Arts area. The quality of the work produced by our Visual Arts students continues to be outstanding. Catholic Earthcare Youth Summit

On Friday (September 3), Ms Simone Preedy accompanied Year 12 students Ella Waddy and Chris Cakir, Elizabeth Lee and Alexis Low to the Catholic Earthcare Youth Summit at Aquinas College.

Our student leaders who are very much involved in promoting sustainable practices at Corpus, had the chance to share what they are currently doing with other schools as it relates to ecological justice and sustainability. Students were encouraged to share ideas with other schools. Students were encouraged to take what they learnt through the day to create an action plan and pledged to a long-term commitment to ecological justice and sustainability within our College community. We will see some of this action in Week 10 during Spirit Week organised by our College Prefects.

Public Speaking Success

Two of Public Speaking students recently competed in the Rotary 4 Way Speech Contest Semi-Finals and one has progressed to state finals!

Keerthana joined Aidan Foley in Year 10 to compete against six students from schools within various Rotary districts including Foundation Christian College, Carnley Anglican Community School and King’s College. Both represented the College so well and feedback from Rotarians was that the calibre of our speakers was very apparent.

Keerthana Binu was one of two students selected to progress to the state final. That round will take place on Sunday 19th September at the Darius Wells Centre in Kwinana. The winner will be progressing to the national final in Sydney.

Faith in Action Update

LifeLink Week

The LifeLink organisation was established by the Archdiocese of Perth in 1994 to provide for the
ongoing financial and promotional support of agencies established or assisted by the Church.

LifeLink’s agencies deliver professional services & caring support to thousands of people in need throughout Western Australia each year.

The work of LifeLink is indeed a positive demonstration of: Faith in Action.

Week 7, we celebrated LifeLink with lots of festivities and fun! LifeLink is an organisation that directly helps those in the Archdiocese of Perth and is organised into 11 care agencies. This week was about raising the profile of LifeLink and its agencies in the College and community and raising funds for the agencies.

We held a bake sale and a sausage sizzle on Wednesday and raised $970 to go directly to LifeLink. The winning house for the video Tik Tok was Pallotti, they showed great enthusiasm, participation by all and sharing the message of LifeLink. Well done to all the Houses. The Middle School Winner of the Kahoot Quiz was 9 Pallotti Francesca and the Senior School Winner of the Kahoot Quiz was 12 Salvado.

Thank you to everyone for their support of the week!

Middle School – Selfless September

Just a reminder to please continue with your ‘Selfless September’ Grid you were given two weeks ago. This will be collected beginning of Term 4 by your Homeroom Teachers. “Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness” Seneca (Roman Philosopher).

Middle School – Year 7 only Corpus Prayer Bears

For the final two weeks of the term, the Year 7’s will be completing a joint activity with the Religious Education Learning Area, Faith in Action Program and Year 7 Pastoral Program. Students will be working in pairs in Religious Education classes to decorate a bear and then write a prayer to go with the Bear. These will be given to the children at St Michael’s Ward at St John of God Hospital. Students are asked to please bring in some items to help decorate their Bear, such as:

  • Fabric off cuts

  • Silk flowers

  • Beads/rhinestones/jewels/buttons

  • Elasticated or stretchy bracelets/costume jewellery

  • Coloured hair elastics/scrunchies

A sample is shown of what was created last year.

Year 10 Faith in Action – Due Week 1 Term 4

Core Service can be defined as involving personal contact with the person being served or an activity that directly helps for example, a disadvantaged person. Whereas Indirect Service can be defined as does not help a disadvantaged person but still provide assistance to someone.

Students are required to complete a minimum of 10 CORE Hours and a minimum of 5 INDIRECT Hours. But we would love for students to complete more than a total of 15 hours. This is due in by Friday Week 1 of Term 4 and students have had since the beginning of Term 1 to start, with plenty of opportunities throughout the year.

Purple booklets can be downloaded from the Student Ministry Portal and are called “Year 10 FIA Booklet”. If students have any queries please see Ms Thomas in the Upper Room.

Paul Dillon Presentations – Drug and Alcohol Research and Training

On Monday 6 September, Year 10-12 students had the pleasure of attending an online presentation on drug and alcohol education conducted by Paul Dillon. Normally he would present in person but due to COVID-19 restrictions Paul live streamed his presentation from New South Wales again this year.

Paul Dillon has been working in the area of drug education for the past 25 years. Through his own business, Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA) he has been contracted by many agencies and organisations across the country to give regular updates on current drug trends within the community. He continues to work with many school communities across the country to ensure that they have access to good quality information and best practice drug education.

With a broad knowledge of a range of content areas, Paul is regarded as an expert in his field. Paul’s presentation was typically inciteful and engaging and senior school students had very positive feedback.

Some of the key points Paul covered in his presentations were myths and facts relating to alcohol and drugs, how to cope when placed in crisis situations, making informed choices to stay safe, the importance of planning ahead and the risks and long terms health effects of vaping. Further information can be found on www.darta.net.au.

Head Boy/Head Girl speeches

On Wednesday 8 September, four Year 11 boys and four Year 11 girls delivered a speech in the Theatre to their Year 10 and 11 peers as well as a number of staff outlining why they should be Head Boy/Head Girl in the newly amalgamated K-12 Corpus Christi College next year.  The students outlined why they chose to nominate for Head Boy/Head Girl, the qualities they could bring to the student leadership team and their vision for how the College could be even better in the future. Head of Year 11 Mr Andrew and I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing each of the outstanding students who nominated for the position of Head Boy and Head Girl. We were very grateful for the opportunity to do this.

In their speeches, the Year 11 students referred to how much the College has been integral in their growth and development, they mentioned their desire to give back to the College, serve others and contribute to a positive, supportive atmosphere based on kindness, acceptance and belonging. Students also touched on how the Head Boy and Head Girl would serve students from Kindergarten to Year 12 and help to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.  The quality of the speeches this year reflected the standard of the students who nominated for Head Boy and Head Girl.

Effective Revision - Jane Genovese

Retrieval Practice is one of the strategies that a presenter at the College, Jane Genovese, has shared in her pastoral sessions to Senior School students on effective study skills.

Retrieval practice is the process of actively recalling information from your long term memory. Research shows that retrieval practice is the number one most effective strategy for supporting learning and improving performance in exams.

Many students fall into the trap of rereading, rewriting or highlighting notes because it feels easier and more comfortable but this is a lot less effective. The strategy below takes around 5 minutes. I have recommended that students in Years 11 and 12 try it out with one syllabus point from one topic (preferably something they did a few weeks ago) to help them to start building an effective habit.

How can a whiteboard (or a large sheet of paper) help you ace your exams?

Two words: active recall.

According to cognitive psychology, active recall (also known as retrieval practice) is the number one way to retain information. Research shows it’s a much more effective way to study than rereading your books or highlighting your notes.

Here’s how you can do a quick active recall session with a whiteboard:

1. Grab your pen and a copy of your syllabus.
2. Flip straight to the unit content section.
3. Now choose a syllabus point.
4. Set a timer for 5 minutes.
5. Without looking at your notes or books, write and/or draw as much as you can remember on that syllabus point.
6. When the timer goes off, check to see how much you recalled correctly and where the gaps in your knowledge are.
7. Got something wrong or missed an important bit of information? Grab a different coloured pen and write that stuff down.

Upcoming Examinations – Year 11 and Year 12 – Watches not allowed

Students in Year 11 or 12 are unable to wear or take a watch or wireless-enabled technology device e.g. Fitbit, into the examination room during the upcoming examination period. These items will be considered unauthorised items.

Personalised written and practical examination timetable

Students are now able to download a copy of their Personalised written and practical ATAR examination timetables if they are enrolled in a Year 12 ATAR course.

This year SCSA will be collecting Year 12 students’ mobile phone numbers via the student portal. If SCSA need to contact students during the examination period, this will be done via group SMS. I have encouraged all students to login to the portal and update/provide their mobile number.

Spirit Week

In Week 10, we will be celebrating Spirit Week. This is a student initiative led by Year 12 Prefects. The purpose of Spirit Week is to raise awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, reinforce the importance of physical and mental wellbeing, promote stewardship and sustainability and celebrate and farewell our Year 12 students. Year 12 students have been told there will be no “muck-up day”. Any unauthorised activities could put them at risk of not being able to attend Graduation celebrations.

Spirit Week will encompass Wellness Week, Dress Up, Sporting Activities for Year 12s and a Stewardship Extended Lunch.

Below is the schedule for the week 10:

Dress ups for the Year 12 students will be as follows:

  • Tuesday : Dress up as a celebrity (actors, singers, actor from a movie)

  • Wednesday: Wear BLUE – awareness colour for Save Our Sons foundation

  • Friday: Dress sporty/athletic

Students will be permitted to wear their Leavers Jackets on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Thursday students must wear full winter uniform as we have a Whole College Assembly on that day.

All Year 12 students will be required to pay a minimum of $2 dollars to their House Prefects in homeroom this week to be allowed to dress up. These donations are necessary as they go towards the Save Our Sons foundations.

Catholic Earthcare Youth Summit

On Friday 3 September, four Sustainability Club members had the opportunity to attend Caritas’ inaugural Catholic Earthcare Youth Summit hosted by Aquinas College.

The day started with a beautiful Welcome to Country. As one Aquinas College student played the didgeridoo, a group of his peers performed a traditional dance which drew its inspiration from native Australian fauna such as emus and kangaroos.

Under the guidance of Ms Simone Preedy, we (Alexis Low, Liz Lee, Chris Cakir & Ella Waddy) were immersed into a world of sustainability within a forum of like-minded students from various Catholic schools across the Perth area and two regional schools via the event being live streamed. Throughout the day, we were able to engage in discussion with other students on topics that ranged from what was currently being accomplished in our schoos,  to our hopes and aspirations for the future.

The afternoon sessions were filled with many presentations from various organisations including the Water Corporation, Waste Wise and Climate Clever. The guest speakers were highly informative and provided us with a range of ideas, inspiring us to go further in our sustainability journey. We were enlightened on the harmful effects of our excessive consumption of the Earth’s resources as well as the delusion of “green washing” that causes more harm than good.

One guest speaker who was truly motivating was celebrity gardener, Costa Georgiadis from Gardening Australia. He possessed a broad wealth of knowledge and advice, which when combined with his obvious passion and zest for the environment, touched the hearts of all who were present.

All students came away from the event inspired to do more, make a difference, and help to encourage sustainability within the school and the wider community. We are looking forward to setting the foundations for  a more proactive and sustainable school.

The day concluded with a liturgy in the Aquinas Chapel where we were called into the presence of the Lord to pray, give thanks and ask for strength for guidance in our journey ahead.

As said in Pope Francis’ 2016 encyclical Laudato Si, (meaning ‘praise be to you’),“Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home.”

We are reminded to embrace our home. Pope Francis’ encyclical is an urgent call to tackle the current ecological crisis by making a shift that will allow all humans to live sustainably and with dignity. Some themes explored in the document included a moral and spiritual challenge, care for God’s creation, impact on the poor, the call to solidarity and most importantly, Pope Francis calls for a change in lifestyle and consumption which were all elements that were discussed and explored during the day.

The time to act is now.

By Alexis Low, Liz Lee, Chris Cakir & Ella Waddy

NAPLAN results 2021

We are pleased to announce that individual results for the 2021 NAPLAN Tests are now available.

Individual NAPLAN 2021 student reports will be distributed to all families. Students will receive a personalised envelope in Homeroom by Friday 17 September. If you do not receive your copy, please contact the College.

For your convenience, the College will also add NAPLAN records in SEQTA (in the Student Information Pane) in coming weeks.

NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is important to remember that NAPLAN tests are not pass/fail tests. At the classroom level it is one of a number of important tools used by teachers to measure student progress.

How is NAPLAN performance measured?

NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, and is designed to illustrate the range of student performance across the country.

Individual student performance is shown on a national achievement scale for each test. The performance of individual students can be compared to the average performance of all students in Australia. Information on individual student reports is available in the Student report- information for parents brochure.

Results indicate that Corpus students achieved above CEWA schools and above State and National averages for all tests across Year 7 and Year 9. An excellent result.
