Public Speaking News - Lions Youth of the Year

The College Public Speaking program is officially in full swing! 46 students across Years 7-12 have enrolled in the program, to be coached by a team of dedicated Year 12 coaches and English Teachers ahead of the College competition night to be held in Term 2.

While most of us enjoyed a relaxing long weekend, Chelsea Fuderer (12 Romero) and Chris Cakir (12 Mackillop) commenced the season by competing in  the Lions Youth of the Year contest.

The comprehensive selection process involved a panel interview and public speaking component consisting of two impromptu responses and a prepared speech. Our seasoned public speakers competed against contestants from Perth Modern School, Scotch College, Iona Presentation College, John XXIII College and CBC Fremantle; both Chelsea and Chris drew on their years of experience to hold their own in this high calibre field which left the panel ‘splitting hairs’ to choose the one winner to progress to the regional finals.

The qualities sought by the judges – apart from academic attainments – include but are not limited to those of leadership, sportsmanship and good citizenship. Through their participation, Chelsea and Chris have affirmed their own development in this regard, and we also look forward to their guidance as they support the next generation of Corpus public speakers .
