'Have Sum Fun' Maths Competition

‘Have Sum Fun’ is an exciting mathematics competition in a quiz night format, open to Years 7-12. Teams of six students race against the clock to solve four tough rounds of eight challenging maths questions, in a very intense, but also very fun environment.

Last Friday 23 October, two teams of mixed Years 7 and 8 students competed at Trinity College supported by Mr Pauley, and Years 9 and 10 students competed at All Saints’ College supported by Miss Coma.

This follows on from earlier this year, where two teams of mixed Year 11 and 12 students competed at Trinity College supported by Mr Platel.

Challenge yourselves to the below questions from the quiz – calculators allowed (check answers below)!:

Years 7-8: For the two whole numbers M and N, if M + N = 48 and M + N2 = 104, what number is N?

Years 9-10: What comes next in the sequence? 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 9, 6, 7, 16, ____

All students enjoyed the evening (particularly their snacks which didn’t all fit on the tables), and whilst we didn’t place in the top four teams this year, we congratulate all students for their participation! Comments from Year 7 students were:

“The questions we faced were challenging and required a lot of teamwork. Overall we learned a lot, it was an enjoyable night and we would encourage others to participate to have some fun in the future!” Dorothy, Naomi, Emily and Ashton.
