Apex Australia Teenage Fashion Awards 2019
The combined heats and state finals of the Apex Australia Teenage Fashion Awards 2019 were held on Friday 25 August at Lake Joondalup Baptist College Performing Arts Centre. Corpus had three entries: Sisi Ingenere in Society & Environment; Sophie Mumbi in Casual Wear; and Ella Waddy in Formal Wear.
Sisi recycled and deconstructed a man’s suit into an edgy and stylish outfit for the modern woman. She made tailored trousers, a billowing shirt with lots of volume and a focus on the sleeves. The coat jacket was re-purposed into a cropped jacket with a frayed hem and a high waisted skirt, which was designed to accentuate the waist and give more shape to the shirt. Sisi embellished the outfit by screen printing the back of the jacket and one leg with a white screen print of her original drawings.
Sophie designed and produced a daywear garment out of a dark green and orange vividly printed African Ankara fabric. The top was a backless, cropped bustier garment that was lined in a vivid orange satin. Sophie created a stunning back focus on the top by lacing it up with orange bias cut ribbon rouleau. Her skirt was a simple A-line design with a topstitched split over one leg. The simple design was chosen to allow the stunning fabric to be the focus of the design.
Ella designed and constructed an evening tuxedo, which consisted of a fitted and flared jacket that was lined in cobalt blue satin and had a matching blue buttonhole at the waist. Ella had chosen to use black satin for the lapels of the garment and matched this to a satin-covered button at the waist. The trousers were high waisted and bell-bottomed, which referenced the flare of the jacket. To coordinate with the tuxedo, Ella also designed and created an evening shirt from white satin. This had handmade black satin buttons and an unusual back, which featured a satin lattice panel. As a final touch Ella created a black and cobalt bow tie to complete her outfit.
Congratulations to these students, all of whom competed beautifully on the day and were excellent ambassadors for the College. We would, however, like to give special recognition to Ella, as she was chosen as one of two evening wear entries from Western Australia to go to the national finals in Melbourne over the October school holidays. Well done, Ella.
