VET and Transition Services - General WACE
Students at Corpus Christi College have an opportunity to enrol in a course on a Campus at South Metropolitan TAFE. Applications for Year 11 and 12 students to attend one day per week while at the College are available in the coming weeks. It is helpful for students on a General WACE pathway to consider the range of training options listed below.

Aviation VETiS students score Qantas jobs
Five ex VETiS Cabin Crew students now employed with QANTAS visited our VETiS class in April to give them valuable knowledge on the recruitment process, explained what life is like as Cabin Crew and told the students how much our course prepared them for entering into the industry.
This was a fantastic opportunity for the students (and for the Lecturers) to hear the up to date recruitment information, and so rewarding to see how well they have all done in securing jobs. They gave the new generation of VETiS students a clear goal to work towards!
Logistics VETiS students get a view from the top
In March the Certificate II Logistics VETiS class were treated to an exclusive view from the top of the Fremantle Port Authority headquarters. The view takes in the Fremantle port and wharves.
Michael Pal, Fremantle Ports Principal Logistics Analyst revealed his first hand experience on how goods are transported into and out of WA and discussed issues including multi modal transportation and the impact ships, trucks and rail has on Australian businesses and consumers. The students were surprised to learn that one out of every two sea containers we receive is shipped back empty!
Murdoch building now officially open
The new ‘T block’ was officially opened by Minister for Training and Workforce Development, Sue Ellery MC in March. Guests in attendance were treated to a tour showing off the new facilities including:
• Hair, beauty and massage student clinic
• Business simulation office
• Gym
• Library
• Classrooms featuring security and networking equipment
The Murdoch campus is conveniently located in the health and knowledge precinct, including Fiona Stanley and St John of God hospitals and Murdoch University. Parking on campus is extremely limited so please encourage students exploring Murdoch campus courses to consider access to the many public transport options in the precinct.
Applied Engineering now at Munster campus
Late last year the Applied Engineering training area moved into their new home at Munster campus. The new ‘C block’ features mechatronics labs, and equipment perfect for learning 3D printing, CNC-milling, circuit production, laser, precision milling and vinyl cutting.
Applied engineering courses have settled into their new space well, enjoying the brand new facilities, and tapping into the industry collaboration FabLab, also now installed at Munster campus.
New marketing course at Bentley campus
The state of marketing has changed with more convergent and digital technologies changing the way customers interact with businesses.
To tap into this trend, SM TAFE is pleased to offer the Certificate IV in Marketing and Communications for the first time at Bentley campus in Semester 2. Available as full-time for one semester duration, part-time or as a traineeship, graduates will be able to enter into exciting careers such as community relations, marketing and events, sales and advertising, and branding.
New cyber security qualifications to address skills shortages
Over the next decade the Australian cyber security industry is forecast to almost triple in size, with revenue soaring and additional IT specialists required. The federal government has established the Australian Cyber Security Centre and has identified training as a key component in attending to the impending skills shortage. SM TAFE has heard the call, with the Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology (Cyber Security) at Murdoch, Thornlie and Rockingham campuses starting in Semester 2, subject to numbers.
Further qualifications in the pathway are being planned to enable students to apply for credit from networking and security qualifications and to build specialist skills in this industry.
In terms of addressing skills shortages, the good news is that our Certificate IV Programming and Digital and Interactive Games courses now attract Priority Industry subsidies from the WA State Government as these are directly tied to skills shortages.
Nursing courses now have new literacy entrance requirements
For students considering a career in (enrolled) nursing, entrance requirements have changed, affecting Semester 2 applications into the HLT54115 Diploma of Nursing. The changes mean students will need to demonstrate an even higher English language ability than other courses and literacy, comprehension and numeracy tests are required as part of the application process.
Please note: nursing is a popular course and applications will be ranked with only top applications receiving offers. Students should bolster their application before finalising by 11 June.
Calling green thumbs to the next Murdoch Plant Sale
Did you know horticulture students work in our accredited retail plant nursery at Murdoch campus to produce quality plants for sale to the public?
Students propagate and nurture natives, herbs and a selection of exotic plants. Then they prepare their species for sale, including merchandising, pricing, packaging and promotions of their plants. The sales run twice a year, with the next event planned just prior to Mother’s Day, Saturday 12 May, 10 am to 3 pm and on selected days and times for the following week. This year, floristry students are getting in on the action, producing arrangements for sale for lucky mums on Saturday sale day.
If you love cheap plants, need to buy something green for a nature-loving mother, or want to support our students in their horticulture learning journey, the sale is definitely worth a visit.

Women in Engineering scholarship program now open
Chevron Australia partners with SM TAFE each year to provide scholarships to 14 women to study the 20-week Certificate III in Process Manufacturing in a supportive environment, plus gain access to women mentors in industry as a pathway to further work or study in the oil and gas industry.
Applications are now open for the next intake, and require a short questionnaire to be completed by 28 May to be considered for this valuable opportunity. Classes start 16 July at Munster campus, where our Oil and Gas courses are delivered in state-of-the-art facilities.
Students with year 10 level mathematics and English are eligible to apply. The program is designed to assist women to enter the industry, and is structured to provide a high level of support to assist with the demands of formal study and to provide an alternative university pathway.
Defence and shipbuilding pre-apprenticeships in Semester 2
Do you know a student who would suit a career in fabrication and mechanical engineering?
Applications are now open for our pre-apprenticeships, which commence in Semester 2 at Peel, Rockingham, and Thornlie campuses.
Pre-apprenticeships are a great way for students to learn the fundamentals of a trade, and also place them ahead of the pack when the time comes to seek apprenticeship opportunities.
Mechanical and fabrication engineering is also projected to be a growth area, with these skills required by the shipbuilding and defence industry. We are delighted to have formed a partnership to harness this growth as part of a new national shipbuilding college.
